The Journey
The timeline below traces the Hall Bulldog’s path from its construction at Bowles Agawam Airport in Massachusetts, through testing and modifications, to its appearance at the Cleveland Air Races. The aircraft underwent several configuration changes during this period, most notably to its tail section—evolving from the original tail through an enlarged rudder, a dorsal fin addition, and finally to its race-ready configuration.

Configuration Evolution
The Hall Bulldog went through several tail configurations during its development:
- Original Tail: The initial design, seen in August 15 photos at Bowles
- Enlarged Rudder: A larger rudder for improved directional control
- Dorsal Fin: Addition of a dorsal fin for stability (seen at Roosevelt Field, August 22-28)
- Final Tail: The race-ready tail configuration used at Cleveland
The cowl exhaust also changed:
- Original Cowl Exhaust: Used through most of development
- Final Cowl Exhaust: Updated design for the Cleveland races
